MONTESSORI EDUCATION
Our AMI Montessori School embodies the educational principles established by Dr. Maria Montessori (1870- 1952), an Italian physician who dedicated her career to the study of children. She understood that, given the proper environment, children flourish, developing practical and intellectual abilities through individual discovery and exploration of language, math, geography, biology, geometry, art and music.
Dr. Montessori created many innovative classroom materials designed to help children develop skills while being active learners, decision makers and problem solvers. This approach fosters a love of learning and a sense of their place in the world.
In a Montessori school, children learn in mixed-age classrooms. At WSMS, you’ll find children working independently, in partnership with another child or in small groups. Unlike other preschools, where all the children are engaged in a singular activity, the Montessori classroom is an orderly beehive full of children working on indeÂpendent activities. They are free to choose their own work and focus on mastering new skills. Older children are role models who help teach their younger classmates.
